A credit check involves getting a credit file from one or more of the reference agencies. These detail ALL of your debts and how good you are at making payments. Often, when they process your application, they look at your current level of debt as well as your maximum potential debt (ie. how much debt you could be in tomorrow if you suddenly maxed all your credit/store cards). This is why leaving old credit cards open with no balance on them can hurt your credit score. Its then down to the company to decide whether you fit their profile as someone they want to lend to.
