If I cancel a DD and they try and take it...

Will I get charged?

I recently moved and changed the account from which my Water bill is paid from each month, can I delete the other DD from my old bank account via online banking?

I am only concerned because my direct debit used to come out on the 15th (last one was 15th July) but for the new one they've taken it today so I am concerned that another £26 is going to go out of the old account on the 15th... So is it safe to just cancel it?

Bank is Halifax, btw.
