Bank Account Advice

Hi All,
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I really didnt know where to post it !
I have banked with the Halifax for about 17 years (since I was a kid), and I still only have a basic account with an electron card.
Because of this, I am now somewhat of a lepper with them, and can no longer have counter service, literally everything has to be done through a cash point. I have tried upgrading my account to a full one, as I want a small overdeaft, but they wont let me as I have had bank charges in the last 6 months due to a direct debit that was set up to a charity without my consent.
I dont have the best credit rating in the world, but I do have a mortgage, and I make sure that there is enough in there to pay my bills every month.
I want to switch banks, but I know that all the credit checks can damage your rating, and I really dont understand bank accounts or how they work.
I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction, to a bank that can give me what I need, and a good account.
I want internet and phone banking, a REAL debit card, and a small overdraft facility of say £200 a month.
Can anyone help at all ?????
Thanks in advance,
Gill xxxx

Try Lloyds TSB if you want a decent debit card. They issue Visa Debit.0

I tried my own bank today (Halifax), but they said a flat out no ! Think Im going to have to switch banks all together but I am worried about the credit checks now.
Is it true that Halifax are alot stricter with their scoring than others ?
