Ipod is the actual player (the hardware) that plays music files such as mp3 (the software). Many other players are available e.g. Creative and Iriver and perform the same function as an Ipod....they play music files. An mp3 file is merely a file like any other on your computer, except that mp3 files are for audio playback, normally to store and listen to music. Other types of music files, apart from mp3, exist.

Not a stupid question we all have to learn

As said IPod is the hardware to play mp3's in order to play them you have to import them either via your own ripping which is a program to extract CD audio and convert it to mp3 which is can be less than 10% of the equivalent space or download them then import to player either mp3 pendrive player, ipod or other hardware devices. Bascially depending on compression ratio of mp3 you get some loss in sound, but it various depending on the bitrate which is the amount sampled, if its too low bitrate sub 128kbps you may detect the loss, it depends on music too and sense of hearing. I prefer higher bitrate 192kbps or greater, but the filesizes do increasde hence less songs per gb.
