My mum made one, and she just cast on between 15-25 stitches, depending on the size needle (the bigger the quicker it knits!) and knitted till it looked 'scarf length'.
I wouldn't buy a pattern unless it was for a cable knit, as fluffy scarves can be done in knit/purl and using size 5 1/2 needles they grow pretty quick.
the nearest wool shop to me costs a small fortune, so thanks for this link!!

Just spotted this site.. free knitting patterns, and gives you an idea of how much wool to buy.

If you fancy knitting a fashionable cosy hat or scarf in one of the new "eyelash" shaggy yarns you can find free patterns on the manufacturers website:

I've not knitted anything for years but I've made 2 scarves in 2 weeks!!

There are also a few crochet patterns.

  • Since finding out about Ems-Stitches on here I've ordered about 6 ltimes from them (must have spent well over £150 and everyone I know is getting fluffy scarves, lol) and I must say the service is excellent. I've saved a fortune on what I'd pay locally as well. Does anyone have a pattern for the fluffy scarves with the slit in them? I did have but can't find it anywhere or even remember who made it. Hoping somebody on here can help. Thanks.
    If I had known then what I know now . . .

  • I knitted one of these last night - simply 14 stitches and then when it fit round my neck I did 7 rows of seven stitches (leaving the other seven on the needle) and then did the other seven (working in the loose piece), and then kept knitting until it was the length I wanted it to be. I used size 8 needles, so it took no time at all (I love knitting with big needles!).

I worked on the assumption that I cast on as many as I think to make it the width I'd like, and then divide by two to have enough gap to feed the scarf through (so if it was 20 wide, then I'd do ten and ten, if you see what I mean?)

How much yarn did you use for yours and how much do you reckon I'd need to buy for a child's scarf, aged 7.

Noticed that they accept orders over the telephone which is great if you don't like putting card details on to a web site.
