Cheques in Euros paid into UK Banks

Has anyone tried to pay a cheque in Euros into their UK current account?
My son has done this recently and been told by HSBC that it will take approximately six weeks to clear. As we're talking Dublin to London here, not Mars to Earth it seems an awful long time. I'd appreciate other Moneysavers experiences.

Euros, regardless of which European country they come from are still foreign cheques so need to be converted to sterling.

Different banks use different systems and whilst your son's bank wants 6 weeks to have cleared funds another bank may well do it a lot quicker if you happen to have a second account somewhere.
