Does anyone know if any banks still do savings accounts with a book like back in the good old days

    No, I don't think so but most building societies do. The interest rates will be lower than an Internet account but they are still there. Ask in your local society and I'm sure you will soon be served.

    The Halifax have an account that provides a savings book.
    Its a Monthly Saver, gives good interest if you save between £50 and £500 a month by Standing order. You can also check it online.

    I get my book updated whenever I pop into the Halifax.
