questions about video downloaded from YouTube

Hello

Please could someone advise me regarding a video file which I have been able to download from YouTube and store on my computer as an ".FLV" file.

What I was hoping to do was remove the sound from the file, so that it is pictures only. Obviously I could just turn down the volume when I view the video(!), but I was wondering if there was a way of removing/muting the audio permanently. I do not wish to add different audio, just get rid of the existing music (which is awful) so that all remains is the video images which are really beautiful. I then want to send the video file to a friend who I think has both Windows Media Player and Real Player installed.

The advice I require is:

1) Is there a way of permanently removing/muting the audio?

2) Is there a way of converting an FLV file to another file type so that my friend can play it on Windows Media Player and/or Real Player?

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give.

    Here is a converter:

You can remove the audio with Windows Movie Maker, or replace it with something you prefer.

The latest Real Player recognises FLV files and installs a plugin into Internet Explorer* that presents a download box if you float your mouse over the video screen on YouTube. I installed it for my daughter and it does what it says on the tin.

    * It also adds an extension to Firefox but when we booted up Firefox it said it wasn't compatible (with 3.0 I think).

You don't need to convert videos downloaded from YouTube, you can download them directly in mp4 format:

Personally, I prefer SUPER. Install and run it. Drag the flv file into the program, use the top left to change the filetype, then top middle and top right to change the video and audio codecs. You can then change the video resolution, bitrate, and fps, and the same for audio. Though in your case, you can disable the audio. Then just hit start, and it'll convert it, and stick it into the output folder.

While I agree that it is spam in the sense that he keeps posting it, how is it different from people who always recommend firefox if there's a problem with IE, or always recommend buying a mac if someone has a problem with their PC?
I'm assuming that you're assuming that he's affiliated with the sites he links to, which is likely. And MSE is supposed to be impartial, but what if the tool he recommends is just as good as the others out there? These threads always get 5 people recommending 5 different tools, so why not add another?

I'm not disagreeing with the ruling (And the link in his sig was against the rules, no questions asked). However, I couldn't find anywhere in the rules specifically disalowing this. The closest I found was this:
...they should not be linking to their own site, unless it is directly relevant to and aids the discussion. For example a link to the terms and conditions section of a relevant offer would be permissible if it were relevant. However such people should not start (or deliberately engineer others to start) such discussions themselves.
Taken from a different part of the rules talking about company discussions, but isn't it relevant?

Again, I'm not looking for an argument, I'm just curious.

The rules are pretty clear about advertising. Nothing to do with the efficacy of what he's selling. And if it was simply a mistake and he was being sincere then why not make it clear it's his own site? I can't say 100% for certain it is but it'd have to be a very unusual person to be obsessively advertise someone else's site all over t'internet.

"This site is free from advertising. Posts on any board considered to be advertising goods, services and/or companies will be removed. We also do not allow advertising via PM

Examples of this can include anything from a specific sales post or a link to your own website in which you attempt to sell something to someone offering their holiday home to forum members. Unfortunately we cannot allow any advertising of any description no matter how honourable the intention. "

    Ah, okie.
Out of curiosity, what happened if you had a site that offered a video conversion service that deals with some really obscure file format that you know for certain that no other tools/sites can convert from/to?
If someone asked for a way to convert from/to that file type, would you have to wait for someone else to post a link to your site?

You can post your own stuff but you're meant to get permission from the admin team first. There are posters on here representing companies as well but they're meant to get permission to post as representatives of companies and they're on an official list in the site feedback board (I think).
