Why can't I find a job I actually like!!!!????

I feel like one of those people who have such cruddy luck with jobs. I feel like I've had loads and I've disliked most of them. I worked at retail store, selling Mac computers, I did like it but I had issues with the manager. I took a job at a coffee shop, which I ended up doing nothing but dishes all day, just to pay the bills. I didn't like the fact that I never got to make the drinks, which is what I enjoyed! I took a job at Gap as fitting room girl. I stood around all day, it was quite boring. I got another job as an admin girl, this was a temp position, I did like the company and the job, but the office was so disorganized. So I left that for my previous job, which I thought would have been permanent! I loved the job, hated the manager. She was a bit psycho. She got rid of me (fair enough) and I've had to take a job at a call centre to pay the bills.. I really don't like it. I feel like a robot all day. Stuck in a cold office having to take loads and loads of calls about things I just don't care about. It's not an awful job, I just don't really look forward to going in. It's not rewarding at all. It's mundane and boring. Most of the jobs I've had were ones to keep the bills paid. I really want to be in a job where I like the company and I enjoy the position, with a decent wage - and I want to be there for a very long time!! I hate having to take a job so we can eat, rather than me actually wanting to be there.   I want to apply for a new job already (I've only been there 3 weeks!) but I don't know if I should bother putting this one down. I have to give a month's notice, but what would happen if I just left?

I can't find a better way to put this, so I'm just going to say it - have you ever considered that you are part of the problem?

You appear to be in jobs that require little or no skills - have you thought about getting some qualifications?

Without also sounding a bit blunt but how many people do you know who actually enjoy their job?

The problem is at the moment you're doing a lot of job hopping, which doesn't go down very well with prospective employers. I speak from experience as at my interview for my current job the MD noted I had quite a few jobs in a short space of time.

The reason I had a lot of jobs in a short space of time was my own fault (apart from my previous position where I was being bullied) I was indecisive and completely unsure what I wanted to do and lost interest in a job after 6 months. However I am now in a position I like, with scope for development and nice people, just glad the MD gave me a chance to prove myself.

Sometimes though, we have to do the "cruddy" jobs to be able to work our way up. How about sticking in your current position and maybe doing a part time course like DMG suggests? It will help improve your skill set greatly.

Other than that, what would your ideal job be?
  • What do you actually like doing? What are your hobbies? If you could find a job that in some way combined your interests, that would help. I know what it's like to have awful jobs so I sympathise.

It's not really a question of "luck". People get jobs with which they're satisfied (agree with Bunnie that few people actually enjoy their jobs) by planning a career, improving their qualifications, staying in a job long enough to progress and not leaving jobs for petty reasons.

You need to sit down (with help if possible) and look at your skills, qualifications and goals so that you can make some progress in your working life.

I'll send you a hug because i was very much like you, every job i had a ended up hating, I figured that i can't work with the public in shops because i don't like their rude attitudes and it rubs me up the wrong way, i don't like working in supermarkets where i got sneezed on because peoples maners are so rude, i'd end up always off with a cold that someone sneezed all over me.

spent a good ten years temping so that i wasn't in a job long enough for me to hate or bosses to hate me.

But I think it comes with age and you finally either find something you like or review how you are in a working environment.

I work in probation now and have done for almost a year, and I really do enjoy my job, 10 years ago I probably wouldn't
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?
  • Thanks for the replies. I just needed a bit of a rant there. I'm taking a part time psychology course in the fall, I'm really looking forward to it. I think I'll stick with this one for a while. I suppose there aren't many people who really like their jobs. I suppose I shouldn't really complain. It's a job. It'll pay for my course and the bills.

Would it not be a better idea to do a course that makes you more employable?

I loved what I currently do for the first 5-6 years. Been doing it 14 years now. Got a bit fed up of it so joined an agency so I can get to do different types of my job for different companies and the variety has put the enjoyment back in.

Yes, but do you "love" and "enjoy" your work inthe same way that you do your leisure time? It seems to me that we use the same word for both, but with very different meanings.
