I'v got £50 for food next week, Tesco on-line or aldi.

Hi guys I trust in you all.

As the title says Iv got £50 for my family for one weeks shopping, but were do I do it. I have a new aldi one bus ride away. I have never been so not sure on the prices or what they sell. Or do I shop at MrT on line??

I will meal plan but the kids eat man size dinners and the Dh eats monster size:eek: . Every dinner has to have meat or it is not considered a meal.

Any advice will be great. My store cupboard is very low this week will have even less next week. Eg no tinned choped toms ect witch I normailly have loads off.

Thanks all.

Tesco online. I know you'll pay a delivery charge, just get the cheapest day or see if anyone has a voucher code.
When I go to Aldi I always end up going to Tesco aswell, there's stuff they don't do that we use all the time, like proper coke.
And you won't have to lug it home on the bus.

Why not start by listing what you DO have :) then we can see how much you need to buy and you can do a meal planner for the week :)

And portion sizes... bulk it up with rice, pasta or spuds... even better cut the portions down a little... won't do them ANY harm at all :)

btw super cheap meal - ham and pea soup if you have a butcher nearby... get a hamhock and cook it up, get dried peas (pretty cheap) and an oinon or two and follow the instructions for the peas. Once mushy add extra stock and blend - pick meat off the ham hock and put a handfull on top of each bowlfull :) Yummy and VERY filling :)

    B flour and yeast
    dried peas and onions
    pasta lots
    tuna 3 tins
    2 tins of beans

    small bit of cheese
    2 tins of oxtal soup
    tin fruit
load of peas and strawberrys in the garden and lettace as well
    noodles enough for one dinner.
spay oil and herbs spices ect
    baking things
    300g mince
    couscous for one dinner
    milk 2lts uht

Thats all that will be left on sunday.

I know that I can get a ham hock for about £2 so that could be one dinner with h/m bread

Could meat balls and pasta, all i would need to buy is 2 tins of toms. so 50p

Well the mince can become chilli con carne :)
2 tins of tinned toms, 2 tins of kidney beans or 1 and 1 baked beans, 1 onion (pref large) garlic or powder, chilli (either dried, fresh, powder or even tabasco sauce). If you have then cumin and stick of cinnamon too.
Ideally some tomato pure and red wine but they're not essential...

I use the BBC recipe (google should bring it up :) )

I would buy sausages - maybe from the butchers? I tend to find they work out cheaper unless you buy value sausages  and that would get you sausages and mash with the mash you have.

Get baking spuds - if you make extra chilli you could serve that on the baked spuds or serve with a bit of grated cheese and baked beans :) Or even serve with Tuna & sweetcorn mixed with some mayo.

how many meals that got us so far? I've lost count! :rotfl:

The thing to do is to stretch out more expensive ingredients where possible to make two or more meals.

For example, you could use leftover ham hock, with the dried peas in a soup to serve with bread for a lunch or a supper.

The mince can be fried with some onion, then split so half becomes chilli con carne with the addition of some stock, a tin of tomatoes, chopped courgette, pinch of chilli, half the tin of sweetcorn and a tin of kidney beans. Either serve with a potato or some rice.

The other half can be stretched with the addition of of some stock, vegetables such as mushrooms, courgette, tin of tomatoes and served as bolognaise.

You can buy a bag of orange split lentils and add to the mince after browning, then add the liquid to bulk out the meals too.

The tuna can be used with pasta and served in a bechamel sauce, mixed together with half the tin of sweetcorn, put into a ovenproof dish, topped with grated cheese and baked. Serve with home grown lettuce and a chopped tomato.

I made some lovely rosemary and garlic focaccia the other day using HM dough and this could be served easily with pasta dishes.

I would pick up some turkey breast meat which is really reasonably priced (cheaper than chicken) and use with the peas and noodles to cook a chow mein.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • I would say Aldi every time over tescos, and I think you could easily top up what you already have in, have good meals for the week, and have money left over!
  • Really, iv thought about doing the monthly challlange but chicken out every time. I know I over spend and this would be good for us if I could cut down but I love food and love to eat nice things. every thing from scratch so o/s all the way. make bread everyday. we egt through a 2kg loaf. well my son does.

    so far you have

    1. Saus mash and peas
    2. pea and ham soup with hm bread
    3. spag bol made with the mince bulked out with grated carrots, handful of oats and other veg like your onions and peas
    4. baked pot with the extra spag bol turned into chilli and lettuce
    5. tuna and sweetcorn pasta bake
    6. hm cheese and tom pizza
    7. fish or turkey steaks with peas and pots and another veg

you have the things in red! so saus, ham turkey/fish and veg and milk only to buy;)
