Ryanair car hire ripoff

We fly to France and hire a car about 3 times a year. We normally book the car hire by clicking the Hertz link on Ryanair's confirmation email because in the past you seemed to get a slightly better rate.

I've just booked a car for September and when I went to Hertz's site via Ryanair, I was quoted £157 for 3 days. This rang alarm bells because its normally around £80. So then I opened up another browser tab and went to Hertz.com directly and for the same car over the same period, I was quoted £87 and I promptly booked at that rate. So it looks like when booking through the Ryanair link, it costs an extra £70. I wonder if its Ryanair or Hertz that are pocketing the difference?

So you don't know who is 'pocketing the difference', but you thought you would blame Ryanair anyway?
    Gone ... or have I?

I didn't! The title refers to booking through Ryanair.

Nothing is a " Rip Off " if the terms/prices are made clear and the potential purchaser has the option to buy, or not.

OK, I accept it may not be best value to book with Ryanair, but it is not a " Rip - Off ", as such.

It is when Ryanair's link to Hertz states, and I quote verbatum:-

"With Car Hire rates from just »13 / €19 per day, Ryanair's exclusive car
rental partner Hertz, offer special low rates to all Ryanair customers"

Note the "special low rates". When the special low rate is almost twice as much as the normal rate, its a very big rip off.
  • Sounds like a rip off to me. Thanks for the warning.

I just looked at Hertz car rental rates on their site and also on the Ryanair link to Hertz on their home page for Thurs 25 Sept to Sun 28 Sept Paris Beauvaus Airport and the Ryanair link gave me a cheaper price. Fiat 90.91 Hertz, £86.92 (RA), 207 £97.43 (Hertz) £94.83 (RA) and Opal £114.82 (Hertz) £102.24 (RA). Similar story with other airports and dates. What dates and airport are you hiring the car from?

It was Dinard Airport, Brittany. Dates were 12-15th September and quote was for Renault Scenic or similar. All other sized cars were proportionally more expensive. I've just checked again and its still showing £156.10.

The link I used from the Ryanair flight confirmation email is http://www.hertz.be/part/site/ryanair/itinerary

thanks for taking the time and trouble to warn others who may assume they are getting a better deal by going through a website that says it will give you a better deal. If it hadn't been so much more than you were expecting you might not have bothered to check.

Susan, I've just checked your dates and prices for Beauvais, both through Hertz and Ryanair and they tally with yours. Both our rental periods are 3 days so we can make comparisons. Renault Scenic @ Beauvais is £157 from Hertz and a cheaper £133 through the Ryanair link. I'm confused now. How come I've managed to get a Scenic for £87? And it wasn't just the Scenic that was cheaper for me. Every class of car was substantially cheaper than Ryanair. Very strange.
