I am moving into a new house and the previus owner used British Gas and Scottish Power for their energy bills. Do I have to use these energy providers first before changing nor can I change sraight away?

You will become the customer of BG and SP when you move in (you will have to contact them to give your details, and do not forget the opening reading).
However you will be able then to switch immediately, but bear in mind that this will take approx 6 weeks to take effect so you will be using BG and SP power for that time and will get a bill from them for it.

register with the current gas supplier to the address the day you move in with opening readings then register with a new supplier once you have done a comparison on one the sites listed here straight away, it will take a up to 28 working days aka approx 6 weeks to transfer so you will get a bill from the current supplier for what you use up to the date your supply is moved.
