A petrol station worker cloned more than 500 customer bank cards in a £175,000 worldwide scam.

Unsuspecting customers who bought fuel at the Jet service station, in Houghton-on-the-Hill, had no idea cashier Abdul Samad Mohamed Raik used a cloning device when processing their card payments.

  • One person clones 500 cards ... imagine what 11 people could do. Hack and steal details of over 40 MILLION cards worldwide, that's what!! And guess what ... one of those cards could be YOURS!!

    Check out this link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/aug/06/hacking.creditcards?gusrc=rss&feed=networkfront

Plenty more articles about the same on any search engine, go look.

Still think Credit Card Fraud and Identity Theft will never happen to you, and that your cc company/bank is out to scam you when they try to persuade you to buy card or ID protection? How many people out there do you think of the, oh say, 40 million or so, are going to be getting stressed out because their IDs and credit histories have been compromised, and how many are going to thank their lucky stars they had the presence of mind to protect themselves? Time to sort out the mice from the men, I think!

It takes something huge like this to shake us mere mortals out of our false sense of security...and yet I can bet there will still be sceptics out there.

Nothing you can't do yourself for free, should it happen. Any losses are protected by the bank.

Still, I remember the first (and only, touch wood) time I got hit by card fraud, someone taking my debit card details and racking up £4k worth of transactions in two days....

As a student at the time, they rinsed my 2.5k loan, and the overdraft as well, and when I checked the balance at uni the next day, my first thought was "What the heck did I do last night?"

Despite it being covered and recovered by the bank in the end, it still stressed me out big time.
    DFW - DEBT FREEEEEE!

    Total - 10762/10762 :)

Every silver lining has its cloud.
  • Hi loaner, that's true ... but do you really need all the hassle and stress in this day and age? Sure, you can also work out lots of other things, like cooking a meal from scratch, or making your own furniture, or even performing minor operations on your cat ... but wouldn't it be so much nicer and convenient (and safer) if you could just go to a restaurant, buy ready-made furniture, and pay a professional vet to sew up your cat?!

It's easy to say you can do it yourself for free, but when it comes to the crunch, how many of us can sincerely own up to having the confidence to do it without any help? If your bank refuses to speak to you about it on account of the DPA, what's your next recourse? If the Police tell you it's a Bank matter, where would you go next? If your cards and bank account are frozen whilst your case is being investigated, how would you live?

This is not a fair comparison at all.

Cooking meals from scratch is fine, I do this all the time and save a lot of money over going to restaurants every day.

However, I understand that to operate on a cat requires several years of training to qualify as a vet. Even to build your own furniture requires specialist skills.

To dispute fraudulent transactions in your name does not require specialist skills, provided you are literate and capable of stating facts then you can do it yourself.

These policies are a con. Victims of Identity fraud are protected by the UK law and will not be held liable, why pay someone else to defend your legal rights ?

Whatsmore I would rather do it myself, there is a saying "If you want a job doing properly, do it yourself".

I would have no faith in some else dealing with my personal affairs myself, it is simply another layer to have to negotiate with. WHY ?

You appear to be rather keen to promote the benefits of these policies ? Is there a particular experience that has lead you to this vewpoint ? Or do you have any particular allegiances to such organisations ?

This just goes to reinforce the message - don't use your Debit Card in corner shops, petrol stations etc. Use it in ATMs and getting cash-back from the big supermarket chains is usually pretty safe.

If some one clones your Credit Card it isn't your problem, if they clone your Debit Card it is very much your problem.

Totally agree with the points about all these various insurance policies - waste of money.
