Own Car Use Insurance

Options
Heres a good one. Just got Audited for a Journey in my own car, and got asked to prove I had business insurance. Why would I need that I thought? And why has no one ever in my 9 Years ever mentioned it? In fact you have to go all the way into the JSP 752 to find it out(anybody tried using the forms and publications libary online, lol), and asking about, I'm not the first person to get caught out by this on my Station. Have Admin sent out any advice as this seems to be rearing it's head? Have they B**locks:mad:

So make sure you get your insurer to put this on, apparently it's not too expensive; certainly less than the claim I'm about to repay!

Para 04.0617. of the JSP 752 gets you on this.

What happends then when you take the 658 into MT and they tell you they cant give you a car, but stamp it saying you can use your own. Im sure they wont stump up the extra £££ to insure it, as most of us drive group 16+ cars..

I can imagine you putting in a claim for the mileage, and another for the £100 admit fee for issuing a new certificate of motor insurance, and sending another one out the next day all for 1 days insurance.

your Unit should of told every one via Part 1's/Unit Orders this system has been in place since Nov/Dec of last year, but been on the cards for some time, your Admin section needs a shake up, as for the cost as you said it should not be too expensive, mine cost me about £1 extra a month.

  • The requirement to have business insurance for your own vehicle when on duty has been around for many years but only enforced since JPA has come on line. Most insurers do not charge to add business insurance and those that do only charge a minimal amount. Hope this helps.

i think the problem with most unit HR sections is that they have had a shake up.

at my unit they know nothing!! they just quote the jsp number at you.

not very helpful and why should we non HR do there job for them.

if someone came to my place of work asking for a bit of kit to be fixed, i wouldn't give them the ap no and tell them to crack on!!
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

My recollection is that this is actually an insurance requirement and not an MOD one. The MOD just make sure that you have the correct insurance for the travel claim, otherwise they suggest that you are attempting fraud.
Normal Social Domestic and Pleasure only covers you to a single place of work, if you go to an additional place of work then you need class 1 business insurance, so in essence for the type of stuff many of us do which is one main place of work but required to visit other sites then you really do need class 1, otherwise the insurance company may have an excuse for not paying out if you make a claim.
I have never been charged anything extra on any of my policies for getting class 1 cover in addition to Social Domestic Pleasure.

  • I have been in the civil service for 7 years and this policy has been in since before then. You would be better off looking in JSP 341 and if you cannot make sense of that you could contact the MOD Master Driver in Andover they are part of the DSCOM branch in building 400 and you should be able to get the number from MoD Directory Enquiries
  • A friend of mine got caught with this recently, the way I see it is if your only getting PCR for the mileage you shouldn't need business use but if you're getting ODR then I can see why you might need the extra insurance.

    Richie,
Just a bit of clarification from the link in my previous post. If you are required to commute to more than one place of work then you need to get more than the standard Social Domestic & Pleasure Insurance.
To point, when claiming Home to Duty then SD&P will suffice, but the moment you put in a duty mileage claim this usually implies that you are going to another place of work and need increased cover.
Remember this is an insurance company requirement, not an MOD requirement. The MOD are just ensuring that you were meeting the legal requirements and had the necessary insurance in place. The risk you carry in not having the correct insurance is not just having a travel claim refused but more importantly the consequences of being uninsured should something happen, your fault or not!!
