.uk.com are subdomains sold as if they were domains. Avoid. Too expensive.

Best option for non-profit organisations in the UK is to use the .org.uk domain space.

.me.uk is really intended for personal websites, like blogs.

the domain is www. "the village name" .co.uk
Don't really want to give the village name out.
I am sure we could find other domains, and just set one up from scratch. Somehow that is a bit more daunting.

Will wait to see if our latest attempt to contact them has any success.

Is it part of the Any-village setup? Run by Angie Barlow?

She bought all village / town .co.uk names very early on but her idea seems to have stalled at times

Is this the place? If so there is a postal address on it

i can't believe people are saying get a .com, but not a .co.uk...

back in the infancy of domain names, this is what they stood for

    .com - US Commercial
    .net - Networks
    .org - US Organisation
    .gov - Government
    .mil - Military

.co.uk - UK Commercial or Personal
    .org.uk - UK Organisation

    etc etc etc...

so a .com is the same as a .co.uk, but just more american..

and I realise now that people think a .com is just a .com and more international, but it does still stick that it is actually a US domain!

I agree that .com was for US Commercial site but it has become the TLD that is most recognised internationally and .co.uk has become very standard for uk sites. The problem with using one of the less other TLDs is that to the novice they will not pay attention to it and will automatically use .com or .co.uk

What I prefer to do is to try and use a name for which I can regester a number of variations and point them to my site this ensures most people find it from just knowing the name of it.

If this village name is not common you should be able to buy an alternative site and whn the other comes availible buy that and forward to yours.
The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

No it isn't part of that set up. It seems to be owner by a company that does haulage? I think the owner used to live in the village but moved out several years ago.

Most of the domains mentioned are still free, so will just have to pick one and get it registered and then start the process of designing a near identical site!!

    Thanks everyone for the advice.

Hi I have recovered ownership/control of a web site including server and passwords. Just email nominet as the village name owners, explain the web master has moved on and you wish up date the site and take ownership.
After a while they will contact you with everything you need. If you let it expire any one can claim the name once it has been released back into the wild.

    >Does this mean, that after the 5 Oct 2009 if we have had no luck contacting the owners, we could register the address or is that just naive!!

    Yes
