I agree with the costs issue. A proper graphics design company will be able to give you pointers towards embroidery issues, sticker/decal printing costs, ie keeping colours to a minimum.
Fades, shadows etc all cost extra money when reproducing.

I would get the design work done properly now rather than spending a small fortune in production.

I guess it would depend on the type of business your running, to distinguish what logo you would prefer, theres an array of software I use for logo's photoshop, even xara 3d proves effective, at least for merging one image to another.

I use illustrator and Photoshop for 2D designs. For 3D i prefer 3D Studio Max, Maya. For 3D text i would use Xara 3D but then I will export it in Photoshop for further editing.
