Help ... I can't delete OE messages

My father's computer has thrown a wobbler.

When he tries to delete a message in OE nothing happens.

If you press delete on a message in the inbox, it doesn't move.

If you try to drag it to the deleted folder, it says error.

Part two of this request is that OE asks if we want to compact the messages.

It takes 30+ minutes to compact very few files, it has taken 20 ominutes to compact the "empty" deleted folder.

Any advice gratefully received.
