Can a Kong save my sanity?

I have a 2 year old rescue hound who steals food *all* the time, and chews anything she can reach. And she is tall, so she can reach a lot
I have a Kong but so far she hasn't been interested because the treats have gone inside out of her reach. So how the heck to I get her attention onto getting the goodies out?? Am I supposed to use the Kong Paste stuff with the treats or are they 2 seperate choices?
Save my santity - help me get my dog interested in her Kong

Hi
Not sure which Kong you have because there are so many! but it might be worth considering one of these:

You basically put the treats/food inside and the dog has to hit the thing around until the food comeso out of the hole. I have one for my dog and he loves it - keeps hims occupied for hours!0 -
hi
my last dog was a rescue that had been living on the mean streets for a while before the rspca caught her. She never got out of the habit of looking for more food, even when there was plenty around. When we first had her she used to raid dusbins and eat sweet wrappers and old food containers. We were the vets best customers for months!!!!
we used the kong as well--she didn't get the hang of the treats but loved the paste and would spend hours trying to lick it out. we found that meat paste was better than the kong stuff because it had a stronger smell that she seemed to prefer.
She did eventualy stop raiding bins etc but always looked for more food--I think she never really forgot being hungry. But the kong thing really did help

I just tried it with some Peanut Butter in and it occupied her for quite a while by her standards - that's what I call a result!
That pyramid looks interesting too, thanks!0 -
i alternate layers of peanut butter with layers of kibbles in my dogs kong - kibbles are cheaper but peanut butter is more exciting.
She is a rescue who didn't know what dog food was when she came. With Sparkles! :happylove And Shiny Things!0 -
Hi
I have the black Kongs but I also have a (( Buster cube comes in red or blue about £10 )) to put treats in they can't pick it up so they knock it about with their paws till a treats comes out great in the garden0 -
Hi
We got our Puppy a "puppy Kong" and he loves it. We litterally cram it full of stuff - we use a variety of stuff so he doesn't get bored and never knows whats coming next. We use cheap "value" ham and meat speads - again "value" brands. I also get dog meat and freeze portions in an ice cube tray - you can put them in frozen or defrosted. We pop a couple of those in as well as some of his own dried food from his bowl.
I've seen some reviews that say their dogs eat all of their meals from Kongs! Don't think our Dexter would buy into that though - I'm not sure he'd still consider it a treat.AF since 10.04.11

Rub Vicks and Fiery Jacks over the things she normally chews.
She'll soon stop.0 -
I stuff the kong with "anything" ..carrots, meat, cheese cubes, apples then i cover the 2 holes with tesco value sandwich paste ... beef is my dogs favourite."Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone, and do not be troubled about the future, for it has yet to come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering"0

Since discovering the peanut butter trick, I've also been adding various treats and kibble, and right now she clearly is so in love with her Kong that she is fast asleep with her paws wrapped around it, bless her!
I need to buy another now though for her brother - he's getting interested too!0 -
Kongs are a good investment - they last really well. One thing to remember though is dogs do need to learn (some more than others), how to 'work' them, so start off easy with treats that fall out readily, and work up to super difficult stuff like frozen gravey kongs or melted cheese kongs.
You ought to be able to dishwasher them too, unlike cheaper brands. (we have lots of kongs here!)0
