Our neighbour has just come back from hols and as a thank you for looking after their cat has given me a 2.5 lt, 'flaggon' of strong scrumpy cider. Has anyone any good cheap recipes I can use it in. Have tried drinking it but not to my taste. Need to use it fairly fast as states drink withing 14 days.

Right now as we speak I have a joint of pork in the slow cooker cooking in cider. I just buy the cheapest one I can find and submerge it in it with a chopped onion. When it's cooked I will make the gravy out of it. You can also use cider to cook pork in the oven. Anyone who hasn't got cider can also use apple juice or apple puree.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Use it in the slow cooker to make a pork casserole - just replace the water with it.:snow_laug HM Christmas 2010

Doesn't have to be used with pork - if you wanted to you could use it with gammon, ham, bacon joints - chicken too
You could use it just to pep up gravy; to replace fluid in your casseroles/stews (oven or SC)
If drinking the cider isn't an option ... you could make some hot cider punch for Halloween tomorrow~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hot Cider Punch
Stud 1 large orange with 4 cloves and put into the oven (Gas 5/400F) for about 20 mins.
Pare the rinds from 2 lemons and simmer in 1/4pt water for 5-10mins. Strain, add 2oz sugar and return the liquid to the pan with the juice from the lemons, approx 2pts cider, 1 teasp allspice, 1/2 - 1 teasp ginger and bring to the boil.
Slice the hot orange into a punch bowl, add the boiling liquid and top with grated nutmeg.
Cherry Cider Cup (cold punch)
1 can red cherries
1/4 pint water
2oz sugar
rind and juice of 1 lemon
rind and juice of 2 oranges
3 pints of cider
Strain juice from can of cherries.
Put the cherries into a pan with the water, sugar and the fruit rinds.
Simmer for 10 mins in a covered pan.
Strain and leave to cool.
Add the fruit juice and the cider (taste, you may need to add a bit more sugar). Pour over crushed ice cubes in a large bowl.
Both recipes make approx 12 cups (punch cups)

sounds lovely, unfortunately Im working for the next two nights. : (
What temp should I put oven on, as I don't have slow cooker? Will get some pork tomorrow so OH can't make the snakebites while I'm at work ; )0 -
Normandy Chicken - good in the slow cooker or quite quick to cook in the oven.
Brown chicken pieces then fry some onions until brown together with some peeled and chopped apples - the sort that don't go too mushy too quickly. Then stir in some flour and an OXO chicken stock cube. Then add enough cider to make a fairly thick sauce and pour over the chicken. Cook in the slow cooker until tender then stir in some sour cream and serve with mashed potatoes to soak up all the juices. If you haven't got a slow cooker, place casserole in the oven on a moderate heat say 180 degrees for 1 hourIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
