Dell and XP

Hello. :)

Does anyone know if Dell still offer XP on their Desktop PCs?

I know that they did when I checked early last month but now the only operating system I can see on any of them is Vista.

I'm not entirely sure if I'm ready to jump ship to Vista yet.
Please don't turn this into an XP vs Vista thread lol.

You might have to phone them to request XP as the OS. When I order equipment from them I require it not to have an OS and doing the order online it does not give you that option but if you do the order over the phone I am able to request this. The N-Series machines do not have an OS if that helps at all.

Almost all the Dell Vostros have listed have an XP option, costing between a tenner extra and 60 quid.
Inspirons and XPS's don't have an XP option listed.

I don't think they can sell new PCs with XP anymore. You'll either have to purchase a PC without an OS as suggested above, or buy a copy of XP in addition to the copy of Vista that comes with it.

They do sell them with XP but you have to request it!

What they are tending to do now is sell you a Vista PC, with either an XP downgrade disk, or a Windows XP PC with a Vista upgrade disk. It seems to be pot luck when you ask as to which configuration you get.

Just ask them on the phone, and really, Vista isn't as painful as people like to make out sometimes, sure its new, and will take getting used to, but its no worse than XP, just different

    Thanks for your help everyone.

I think I'm just so used to XP and I know all my software works on XP so I'm slightly wary as to weather it will work on Vista.

My mum's new laptop has Vista and I found some aspects of it a lot different to XP and I wasn't used to but I did only mess around with it for 5 minutes. I think it will take a little longer than that to get used to it.lol.

What software do you have that you are concerned about?

Don't forget Vista has been in general circulation for ~18 months now so there's very little commercial software that won't have been updated for it.

    Hello be_alright.

It was mainly Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Itunes but I have just checked it out and it seems they are both compatible with Vista.

Is wireless easy to set up on Vista? I didn't have any problems with XP.

CS2 and CS3 are all fine under Vista, iTunes no problem at all.

However some older packages do have problems, just because it's been out for 2 years doesn't make it any better. If you have a large investment in older versioned software, and are happy with XP, and don't want to spend a fortune upgrading software to the latest version, XP is fine, also some older hardware (printers, scanners etc), don't have drivers for Vista.

That said, many older packages will run in compatibility mode.

Still XP is faster and stable, so for me with offices full of XP systems, Vista isn't appealing to us.

For me it's the software packages which are important not the OS - just to nip any OS Linux vs Mac vs Windows arguments in the bud ;)

I haven't experienced any issues with our mix of wired and wireless machines running different versions of Vista on my home network.
