I have just installed AVG antivirus , the latest version. Previous version was absolutely fine, computer just scanned itself, found 44 viruses etc and it seens the only way to get rid of them is to register and pay. I thought it was free, I'm not very techie and am now worried I am not protected, Any help would be great, thanks

It's still free, but the problem is that the reminder to upgrade your existing free version points to the (more functional) paid for version.
Ignore that and go to http://free.avg.com/ and you can get the free update.0 -
Thank you so much, I have installed as per link and it seems fine. The only thing is my windows security centre keeps telling me I have 38 threats and to update the programme. Can I safely ignore this please?0

Sounds like you need to update AVG. Look for the little multicoloured square down near the clock at the bottom right. Right click it and open AVG control panel. Look for the option to update AVG and once this is done run a full virus scan.
You need to make sure AVG is updating itself to stay protected from anything new that shows up.0 -
thanks, I have updated AVG and all seems well. The message seems to be coming from my microsoft windows security centre.0

Have you tried opening the security centre (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Security Centre) to see which service is unwell? The three items should be colour-coded - any with problems will be yellow or red, with a box to click to take their recommended action to resolve it.0
