Receiving DLA for partially sighted/blind person

Hi. I'm 17 and registered partially sighted. I'm 95% blind in one of my eyes and around 60% in the other. DLA have just sent me a letter advising me that my DLA is coming to an end in a few months and I need to complete the enclosed forms to reapply.

My mother (Single parent) received DLA for me for many years, however when I turned 16, they said that the money must go to me, so this is my first time reapplying/applying for DLA.

My question is if there are any partially sighted people on this forum, or you're a parent of a partially sighted child, what rate DLA are you receiving (Sorry if this sounds rude).

I'm just trying to get an understanding of what I rate I should get now that I'm older and doing more things for myself. I was receiving Lower rate mobility and middle rate care (Roughly £250 a month), however now I'm worried they're going to put me down to lower rate for both.

I'm going to battle this 50 page application tomorrow. It looks like they want to know everything, so I wont attempt it tonight. :rotfl:

    Hi hustle90,

The problem with a question like this is that everybody's situations will be different. You need to think about how much care you need i.e. do you still require care for a substantial part of the day, and then you need to describe why you need this level of care.

    Good luck x

From what I have read the usual award for a blind person is low mobility and middle care. As you were receiving this even though you have some sight if your care needs have not changed you should still receive the same award, but if your care needs are less as you are older and more independent it is likely to be a lower award.

It would probably be a good idea to see a welfare rights officer to help you with your claim, these can be found at the CAB or at your local council.

they send the renewal forms out usually 6 months before your current claim ends, they say you have one month to return them,in reallity you can if you need to take longer,so please dont rush to fill this in,get as much help and advice from as many people as possible before you attempt to fill it in,then do rough drafts if you can before actually putting pen to paper.
When you have completed it photo copy every page, then next time you can refer back to this renewal, then send it back preferably registered post or at least get proof of posting from the p.o
