ipod & i-tunes not communicating ?

in Techie Stuff
possibly coincidental with recently having to do a system restore ....
plugging my ipod in to the pc .. usually results in i-tunes opening and it telling me it's doing a "syn" .. few seconds later ipod says all done etc .
Today .. not happening .. plug ipod in .. have to open i-tunes .. and it's there with everything but no communication with the ipod at all
What's wrong ?

If the iPod isn't appearing in iTunes at all, this might be of some help:
