Paypal sent me a 'money laundering' email

I received this email today, which at first glance I thought was spam, but they had my name at the top. So I went to Paypal (not through the email) and it's not spam.

Yup happened to every seller eventually - you have around 1,500 gbp before you won't be able to receive any more money. Just long into paypal and complete the steps for verification. Then you will be able to receive as much money as you like!

    Hi all.

I've had the same one. I've gone through all the credit card verification and put the number into the resolution page. Now it wants me to update to a business account. I'm only having a clear out so I don't really want to be a business but I can't see an alternative. Will I have to start paying tax and stuff if I complete this upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

You shouldn't need to upgrade to a business account, but if you're doing a lot of selling on eBay, you really need to have a Premier PayPal account.

Personal accounts are limited in the number of credit and debit card payments they can receive.

    Thanks Marty J.

It says that my account is a Premier account, it just keeps sending me to the resolution centre to add my business information.

I guess I can just ignore it. I doubt I will make anywhere near £1700 in a year anyway. I wish!!!

    Thanks for your help

  • We had spam one today which said our account was restricted and to follow links to remove restrictions etc.

    Had me fooled at first.

    then saw the email support@paypal.uk.com
  • If you 'upgrade' be very careful to check PayPal's terms and conditions. You may find that you are giving them permission to dip into your bank account (if a buyer disputes and item received and they decide to do a refund, for example). I do not trust PP at all.

Upgrading gives paypal no more rights than having a basic account. However to sell on ebay realistically you need a premier account purely so you can take card payments.

You do need to go through the process though otherwise your account will be blocked suddenly one day, however wherever it asks for business info just add in your own personal details and ignore the rest, it will let you through the system without completing all the boxes.
