We have just bought a new car and managed to keep our new tax disk off this car and get the money back. This is a Fiat punto and the tax is £120 it is obviously only 3 days old so how much will we get back if returned this week? the dealer said £80? i work out at least £110..as it's £10 per month..or does it not work like that?
Thanks

A refund is paid for each full month left to run on the tax disc at the time you apply for a refund. If you have a six-month tax disc, you paid an extra ten percent handling charge at the time of purchase. This is not included as part of your refund. An administration fee of £7 is charged where the tax disc has not been surrendered.

That's taken from the DVLA site :)

Sounds like it is a new tax disc? When did you buy the tax disc? Where is the car it came from?

If you want to do everything legal you will get £110 back.

Get in in quickly as the situation may change when the paperwork for the exchange goes through as you are then no longer the registered keeper (I think):money:

You can get a form, can't recall the No, from the post office. Take the disc out of the car and send it with the completed form. If you don't, I don't think they will acept it. I know there was an offence of failing to display a valid tax disc, but I think that went out of play with the comp system.:money:

Use V14, stick the disc on it with sellotape or glue. The refund (£110) will be sent to the person named on the V14 at the address given. It helps if that person is the seller as named on the V5 (log book) but I'm not sure if they actually bother to check.

You must also retain section 9 (yellow) of your V5 before you give it to the motor trader - fill in the milage aswell. Get trader to sign section 9 (yellow) And send it to DVLA.

Photocopy the section 9/V14 before sending it, and at your discretion send the section 9 & V14 recorded delivery.

You could send them both in the same envelope to save money.

Within 4 weeks you should hear from DVLA regarding change of keeper. - If you don't get the letter, phone them up and ask them why you have not had it.

3 - 6 weeks you should get your refund cheque.

Thanks wig..well i rung them and they said i can send it back and i have done form etc but i must leave it in the car today as i may get a ticket if sods law there are any checkers round which we have at times where we live! just easier i guess so i will take it out when we get to the garage and do it then..
In regards to the V5 form bit complicted as the address is wrong on it so we have been told to send the yellow bit back and put an accompanying letter with it saying we have chnaged address..
I have one letter for the yellow bit to post and another for the tax form as they are different addresses at the DVLA..does that sond right? all v confusing and i hope the garage knows what to do!

Sounds to me like they advised you to send the yellow and the V14 in the same envelope with accompanying letter, so that the 3 documents can all back each other up, so to speak. Makes sense to me.

Don't worry about the different postcodes, at the end of the day it's all DVLA, just different offices, choose one and send it in. Let them sort it out. I'd use a paper clip or staple the three documents (V14, S.9 & letter). I'd choose to post to the V14 address, because it's not so important if the S.9 goes missing in internal mail, at least you will know the correct department recieved your refund application.

Important things you must do IMO
    Photocopy everything
Send the 3 items recorded delivery in one envelope. & track it.
Follow up with a phone call if you hear nothing on either or both of the change of keeper or refund. Because you don't want to get an automatic fine, and you want your money back.

Makes no difference that you're the registered keeper when applying for a refund.

Ok, so can I nick your tax disc and surrender it then?
