Static Caravan - worth it?

The maths dont really add up.
If buying then renting out you would have to pay advertising, cleaning costs, do tax returns.repairs +breakages and have a £5K commitment every year
If you get in early you could have weekends in caravans for as little as £100 maybe 250 high season.
You could have 10 or 20 of these for the cost of the site fees alone without the 15/20K capital outlay.0 -
my dad has a caravan on a park resort site (similar to haven) I don't think he regrets getting it but the site is only open 7 and a half months and the rent is close o 3k:eek: and believe me Park make money at every opportunity! however, he doesn't rent his out to anyone except family (at no cost!) but I can say that I have seen the way the rented ones are treated and I would never ever rent one out because they get wrecked.0

we had a static caravan in Hemsby great yarmouth a few years back
it was a private site, 10 min to beach, 5 mins to pubs, clubs and entertainment
we where paying £1,400 a year site fees
you could rent out to who you wanted to, park very clean and maintained well, there was no age limit and was in your agreed sale
one of the reasons why we would not buy from Haven or other big name sites
but as the other post said, when you sell your caravan you pay them a commision even if they dont sell it for you that you sell it yourself
as i said in my other post
holiday chalets, seem cheaper site fees and to maintain

My parents have one too, they paid over £20,000 for it when it was 1 year old and have had it for two years. The site fees are £5000 per year (Dec-March) plus insurance, water rates, gas, electric, not sure about tv lincense but certainly the site seem to be billing them for something, they paid a stupid amount to get the water turned off in the winter but I think they know how to do it now and will do it themselves next time.
The site is really great though, in Wales with great walks and beach, really lovely established park with shops/post office/great pool/sauna/jacuzzi, kids club and activities (& loads of other stuff) No cash points though!
My dad is semi retired and writing a book so he takes his laptop there (the park has wi-fi) for a week at a time at the moment and mum goes at weekends or midweek when she is not at work.
They are not allowed to rent it out to anyone other than close family and friends though, so not much opputunity for getting any income from it and last year they spent so little time there as my dad was working full time, so when you work it out its alot of money per night! They could have a few great holiday abroad for that!
When the caravan is a number of years old (can't remember how many) is has to be removed so my parents will have to have it sited somewhere else or upgrade (part-ex?)
