Ive had a call from bauer who do empire magazine and the company who owns a nintendo magazine who offered me a trial period for the 2 magazines

These companies invariably use the 0845/0870 numbers, so by using the online method it saves the cost of a phone call

Whenever I have tried to cancel a direct debit in the past via the bank counter, they have done so for me, but not before making a strong point of asking me to cancel with the company first/too.

I asked them why, they have told me that the company can still request the money, and send out the goods accordingly. Only, when they do not get their money, they will have sent out the goods and you will still be liable for paying for them.

Please, make sure you cancel with the company as well- either email, write a letter or call, but make sure you cancel properly.

It goes without question that you also have to email the company in order to cancel the agreement. However the majority of these companies do state that you can cancel the agreement at anytime by cancelling the direct debit.
