Use Cheque instead of Postal Order

Buying items on Ebay from sellers who accept Cheques / Postal Orders

If the buyer has a bank account they would be better off using a chequebook instead of buying a postal order (they are expensive). If buyer has a cash only account which doesn't include a chequebook they can pop down to their local bank and get the staff to PRINT a cheque for them. The facility to print cheques is also available to those with a Savings Account only (even childrens accounts) - although banks and building societies don't exactly widely advertise the cheque print facility. It is a FREE way of using cheques without an actual chequebook.

I bank with Nationwide and when I first got my account with them I was 17 and so wasn't allowed an actual chequebook. Found the information about having a cheque printed in-branch in my FlexAccount brochure (one sentence) so I went to my local branch and asked for this service. Turned out there were NO FEES for this service whatsoever - a lot better than buying Postal Orders. All you have to do is tell them what NAME to make it payable to and HOW MUCH the cheque is for. They print it onto a cheque complete with your bank account number and sort code and a cheque number just like a chequebook cheque but Printed instead of Handwritten.

Bear in mind though that a printed cheque, at least in Nationwide, is cleared funds so you can't cancel it, unless you take the cheque back into the bank. Suppose that's the same with the PO though. The Nationwide in Manchester has a nifty machine that does it for you.
  • Most will be able to supply them but a lot will charge for the privelege. Expect to pay around £10 per bankers cheque.
