Last time i bought a carpet i bought it from a company that sell through ebay. Was handy for me as i had been selling bits and bobs and i of course used a cashback site for the seller fees ;) i think i am due about £4 back. I hear ebay are back in quidco for 50% sellers fees so worth using them as well.

The company had nice polite emails then the lady rang and arranged the delivery (we were chatting about ebay for half an hour!) and they personally delivered on a saturday as they were in the area.

Link to the seller i bought from http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZdenvortrading1

    Great thread skintc.

I had a similar dilemma when getting a new room carpetted. I was also frustrated by all the various offers of 'cheapest price guaranteed' etc etc when all the retailers came out the same when it came to the fitted price.

What I did was to buy all the necessary underlay, adhesive, door threshold metals and gripper fom the internet, I found this company to be the cheapest http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/index.html then went and ordered an 'off the roll' piece of carpet from Carpetright at their lowest price and then had the carpet delivered and fitted. The price included the laying of the carpet, I pondered whether I should lay the carpet underlay and gripper myself but didnt bother in the end. The fitter did it and didnt charge any extra. I reckon I saved myself around £150-£200 with very little effort.

though a decent carpet wont need underlay.
Yes it does and an old carpet won't do instead - it's false economy.

I completely agree, in some cases buying a quaility underlay will extend the lilfe of a carpet by years.
  • Can anyone comment on the quality of carpet to use, there seems to be 3 price brackets about £6, £15 and £40/m^2. What did you choose - why?

    Brilliant thread - thanks :-)

I didnt know one company's fitters would fit another company's carpets.

Thats very good to know :-)

Like everything, good quality carpeting isn't necessarily the most expensive. When you buy a carpet you need to ensure that the pile is dense, ie tufts are packed close together so that when you try to press on it or part it you cannot easily see the the base. If the carpet has a long pile the tufts need to be close together otherwise it'll soon look shabby as grit gets to the base of the tufts and then wears it away and the pile will often look straggly and limp.

Carpets made of 100% nylon rarely retain their looks and are bad for static build up. Best to go for wool or a blend of wool/polypropylene or wool with another made made fibre. Berber is often quite good value as it often it made from 100% wool. Darker shade made wholly from wool may suffer fading where furniture is place on top of it for long periods.
  • hi this is my first post so hope its helpful just bought a carpet from car--- right and was told to go to b&q for gripper rod its only 4.98 a bag 8 lengths in a bag pretty good i thought ,also if you get a carpet fitters number from carpet shop your buying from ring them first and ask if they supply underlay as they are always cheaper than shop thanks heather
  • A few more tips to save £s on your new carpet ,

1: Just because you need lets say 36m2 carpet , you wont need 36m2 of underlay , but if you are not wise to the carpet store will charge you for 36m2 but will probably only need to use 28m2 , extra profit for them .

2: A lot of the multiples "con" you by advertising 50% off + another 20% off , most people will conclude they are getting 70% off . Wrong , they actually calculate as follows £100 -50% = £50 - 20% = £40 , so you are really only getting 60% off their previously inflated prices .

3: I totally agree with buying the various components from different suppliers to save £s , in the current economic climate you could also try carpet wholesalers who normaly only supply the trade , sales are very quiet and many are willing to sell to the public to achieve some turnover .
