It's a V5 document for a car that was scrapped long ago. Seller seems to be suggesting that you can transfer the registration number using this; surely this is only posible if you clone the original car or fake an MOT?

If the car has been scrapped and the plate not put on retention (they'd need to provide the V778/1, I think), then it's of no use to anyone, as the plate would also be considered scrapped. I think.

This is what the DVLA says (I was right in what I thought - you can't just use the reg number from a scrap vehicle):
* What are the requirements for participating vehicles?
Participating vehicles must be currently licensed, subject to annual testing and available for inspection. However, applications involving unlicensed donor vehicles will still be considered if:
* the licence for the donor vehicle expired no more than six months prior to the date of the application; or if
* the donor vehicle is not old enough to be tested , i.e. less than 3 years old for cars, motorcycles, etc or less than 1 year old in the case of HGVs.
In both the above circumstances, all other requirements of the number transfer facility must be met in order for applications to be considered.
PLEASE NOTE: Recipient vehicles must be currently licensed in order to participate in the number transfer arrangements.

As far as my understanding goes... your car has to be legal and on the round for you to transfer a reg?

SpikeyUse your judgement, and above all, be honest with yourself.I walk with the world & the world walks with me!I don't make bad choices!!! Other people just fail to see my GENIUS !!!!0 -
The seller seems to imply and condone that nefarious means would have to be used:I HAVE HAD THIS DOCUMENT IN MY NAME FOR 3 YEARS NOW AND I AM UNABLE TO GET THE PLATE OFF AS I DONT HAVE A CAR TO DO IT WITH.....IME SURE THERE ARE WAYS BUT I DONT KNOW THE RIGHT PEOPLE [ IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN ]
I think the seller is intending for it to be used only to get access to the (vaguely presigious) number plate, but the potential uses of this for criminal purposes don't seem to have registered with him (nor the potential crime he is committing).0 -
Don't know if you are allowed to sell V5s, but, even if you are, it's a completely worthless piece of paper, unless the buyer is prepared to undertake some (probable) criminal activity. Very strange.

Old V5's are commonly sold on Ebay for the buyer to attempt to get away with not paying car tax. Cars registered before 1/1/73 don't pay car tax.
An owner of a 1973 or later car that was made before 1973, might buy a V5 for the same model of car and 'change' their car for the one on the V5. I won't go into details for obvious reasons.
The seller of this V5 is suggesting the same, but to obtain the number plate.
All horribly illegal, but as usual Ebay are not interested and the sellers of the V5's are usualy intelligent enough not to suggest anything illegal in their listing (this one being an exception).0
