My son had a v tech computor that plugged inot the tv. He wasn't that taken by it. I found the age ranges for the games are a little high, some of the games aimed at her age involved spelling, but she couldn't spell and got frustrated. I sold mine when DS got a DS his because he'd stopped playing on it.
To be honest although he enjoyed it from time to time it I didn't get my monies (sp)worth out of it, £50 for the actual computor and and about £15 for the games ( this was around 3 years ago so I could be wrong).
That's my experience anyway, someone elses may be quite different

mine had a v tech laptop, cost about £99 from toys r us, aged 9+ waste of money in my honest opinion, played on it couple times thats all, the ds on the other hand is much loved, even with games like maths training, and brain training as well as the obvious gamesenjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)0

How old is your DD/DS?
We have had a variety of Leapsters, the bonus of these being that they are stand alone so don't need to be hooked up to the tv, although thats an option with the L-max but the kids weren't very impressed on the one occasion we did.
My first Leapster - age 1 to approx 3. Very robust.
Leapster Leap Pad - an interactive book. From age 3 - 6 lots and lots of books new on E-bay for around £5 although you can pick up a used Leap pad and 10 or so books for £25 on E-bay.
Leapster (and L-Max) - age 5+ . Hand held console £35 new if you shop around. Mains adapter £7, headphones (invaluable!). Games £1.99 from Home Bargains or £15-£25 elsewhere. 4 AA batteries last ages, great in cars on long journeys. Lots and lots of games, tons of variety. We gave in and got our DDs one each as they fought over the original one.Saving for a Spinning Wheel and other random splurges : £183.500
