RBS student account & Bankrupcy

Hi All I wonder if anybody could give me any advice.

I currently have a cashline plus account with RBS, and I have just been accepted onto a university course so I am told by the bank that I would be eligle for the RBS student account. The only problem is am I am undischarged bankrupt, and RBS do not know this. As an existing customer would they likely do a credit check on me for a student account or am I best just forgetting the idea of a student current account for now or at least until I am discharged?

Thanks for any help

  • RBS will probably do a credit check on you even though you are an existing customer because they will be offering new products particularly overdrafts and loans. Sometimes it is better to keep your head down and not rock the boat and find that you lose what you already have. You could try a totally different bank,( banks like students,) to see if you could get a current account but you would have to disclose your bankruptcy, but if it is declined you still have RBS to fall back on. Also it depends on how long you have got to go before you are discharged, but remember that your bankruptcy will be on your records for 6 years even though you are discharged.

What type of account do you actually have?

You say Cashline Plus but that is a type of card rather than an account. If it's a Key Account you have then any change to a student account would involve a fresh application and it's very unlikely you'd be offered one.

If however you have a 'full' current account (IPCA, Royalties, Royalties Gold) then changing to a student account can be done without a brand new application as the account number remains the same.

You may find it slightly difficult to be approved a student account with interest-free overdraft and credit card when your credit files currently report you as bankrupted.

I suggest you discuss your situation with the bank before submitting the application.

I would say don't waste your time or the banks. Your interest free student account will not happen.
