Gas consumption, seems very high and don't know why
Hi,
I've just got my latest gas bill and it shows a tota of 793 units used (or nearly 9000 kwh) for the 6 months from Feb to end of July. For most of that period the central heating has been off, hot water comes on from 6am to 6:45am and then 5:30pm to 6:30pm. We have a gas hob but oven is electric. For spring/summer I'm a bit surprised our gas usage is so high, doesn't seem right to me. It's not an estimated meter reading, I submitted it just before the end of July so it is accurate (and the previous reading wasn't an estimate either according to the bill). Does the usage seem high as I'm really not sure what the average would be, we live in a 4 bed detached house but not sure that makes much difference really.
Thanks
Andy

I don't think that is high for a 4 bed detached with a gas hob.
It covers all of Feb and March which are cold and you probably have heating on some of the time at least in April/May.0 -
Not sure it helps, but I used 706 units in the same period, in a 4 bed. detatched.
Criteria is more dependent on whether we heated house to same degree though.Bad Spellers of the world untie0 -
From i-measure:
Annual UK Averages
Household
Gas use - 20,582 kWh, 3,930 Kg CO2
Electricity use - 4640 kWh, 2,300 Kg CO2
Person
Gas use - 8,575 kWh, 1,638 Kg CO2
Electricity use - 1,933 kWh, 958 Kg CO2
I think the household figure is for a 3-bed semi, as that's what I'm being compared with.0 -
It is very rare for it to be a metering issue - many people look at their bills and automatically think that it must be reading wrong but meters generally work for a very long time before having problems.
As previous posters have said, usage is probably about right for the size of house and occupants, also we haven't particularly had a lovely warm summer so heating may have needed to be on in the earlier months.
Also, there are any number of factors why you might have high gas usage, your boiler is inefficient, there is heat escaping too quickly, the settings on your boiler/radiators are incorrect.
But seeing as readings are based on actuals, it appears to just be a question of consumption.Dannii_B
