Social work and reading list?

Hi,
I know that there are a few S/W students on here. Has anybody had a reading list yet? I am so brain dead as I finished college in June and due to boredom and being at home watching cbeebies I need something to read, other than community care on a Thursday!

Any ideas?

Thank you:D

    Understanding social work- Neil Thompson
    Modern social work theory-Malcolm Payne
Social work themes, issues and critical debates- Robert Adams et al

These are the books I have got. The Thompson in particular is a very easy read.
It might be worth you looking at a book on anti discriminatory practice, I think Thompson has one.

Social work skills by Pamela Trevithick is also a good read.

Even when you get sent your book list, I would wait until you start before buying many of the books. I found that some tutors like to work from specific books, so although others on the list were useful you could run the risk of buying more books than necessary.
  • Hiya, I am now in my second year of Social Work (scary) which University are you thinking of attending as this will change your reading lists slightly, We were given huge lists of books that I couldnt afford so I went for the more commonly used one, For Law which you will cover extensively I suggest Brayne and Carr law for social workers, fantastic resource that I have used enough time to justify the cost, anything by malcom payne or Neil Thompson, also depending on where you want to specialise ie adults or children will also affect the books you will want/need to buy
  • Hiya mummytofour, I got a reading list when I went to visit my chosen uni for an open day.
I've bought so far... Social work, themes issues and critical debates.
By L Dominelli and M. Payne,
Anti oppressive social work theory and practice
By Dominelli L and Campling J
Using the law in social work third ed
    By Johns R
All were on my reading list, I also bought a social work dictionary by collins.

Have you thought about e mailing your course tutor and asking for a reading list (I think someone suggested this to me a while back)

Definitely Thompson N and Dominelli L are ones to look at - good introduction but great to refer back to as well

The Blackwell Companion to Social Work is also a must IMO.

Agree with Thompson and Trevithick also titles also.

Ethics and Values in Social Work by Sarah Banks was also a staple book which i used in every module.
  • I've just finished my degree and used all of the books others have mentioned the whole time! Also suggest Law for Social Workers by Brayne and Carr. Don't worry too much about updating the book every time a new edition comes out (although wise to get the latest edition at the time!) as the book also has a website which is updated as and when laws are amended/changed etc!

I have emailed the Uni (Portsmouth) who have said that we will get a welcome pack in the next few week. Mean time I think I will buy a book or two as suggested, many many thanks people.
