Trading a car in..
Or P/X it's the same thing isn't it?
I am hoping to go and see a car tommorow and was wondering if i tell him about the probs it has or will he check it anyway? I know the brakes need doing to which i will have them done before i p/x it but didn't want them knocking me down because they think i may not do it and i'm a woman!! When i p/x my old car it had lots of probs he asked no questions and i didn't tell him, we got £500 and i guess it got scrapped as the work would have cost more..he went bust and the car i bought didnt have a legfto stand on so served him right!
Can they knock me down on price after they have given me a p/x price basically or will they just take it on the day?
Thanks

Before you go, find out how much your car is worth. You can use http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/prices/ There's a box titled used car prices. Just pick the make, model etc. of your car. If you're going to a dealer, these are probably the prices they use anyway. You can expect them to pay the part exchange price.
As for the faults, I read your other post and suspect that the garage you approached are being less than honest with you. You'd need a second opinion - which you shouldn't have to pay for!! If they come up with the same list of work and costs, and you still want to part exchange, then it's not worth you having the work done i.m.o. It will cost you more than the extra you'd get on the part exchange.0 -
Thanks a nice simple reply!!
Ok i have looked on parkers and mine is coming up at £1245 as P/X BUT the mileage is a lot lower than the one they estimate and the paint is metallic which doesn't show on the guide it says i have to pay..any ideas on how much more that would add?0 -
The real value of your car is the difference between the part ex value you have been offered and the discount you can get for not having a trade in. If your car is old/in need of work this may well be little or nothing. Best then to not trade in but to offer your old car on Ebay/local classifieds for a low price but higher than the one determined above. Remember that cars kept on the road (even just parked) must be taxed. MOT'd and insured.
In your case you say the trade value is £1245. If you were offered this but could get £500 off your new carwithout a trade in then selling privately for more than £745 (plus selling costs) is a result.0 -

It is up to the salesperson to do a thorough appraisal of your car, he/she should be trained to check service histories basic mechanical issues, by driving your car and testing for themselves before offering you a trade-in price. I would keep any info that is not asked for yourself as you rightly point out they will only try and hit you on a value, a small piece of advice is to make sure that the car looks nice inside and out, have your registration document MOT and any service bills etc available as all this gives the impression that you have looked after your car and means it is unlikely to warrant a really close inspection. Once they have offered you a price and you and they have signed an order stating the price they can give you that is set in stone unless when the car is brought in to be exchanged it has any damage or mechanical work that wasn’t there at the time of appraisal. So if the car is as you showed it to them they will honour the deal, and besides I have rarely seen a salesperson re-appraise a trade-in they are more interested in getting you down the road in your new car!!!Motor Trade Insider(google us)
