Faulty barbecue from Tesco

I bought a bbq last year from Tesco but have only recemtly moved into a property with a garden to be able to use it. I finally managed to put it together, the gas pipes which connect to the main bit are welded in the wrong direction. The gas literally comes out of the taps where the switches are if that makes sense.

I've contacted Tescos with pictures of the gas pipes that are in the wrong direction and pictures of the instructions showing them in the correct position.

They've said without a receipt they won't do anything. I have the box which says its from Tesco's.

Are they right? I'm obviously a little annoyed to be without a barbecue and also the fact that if I'd carried on trying to light it I could have blown myself up!

This is standard Tesco policy to make you give up and go away !
Ideally you need some proof that you did buy it from them on a certain date.
However, in your case I would suggest that you point out that the thing is dangerous and it bears their name. Would they like to resolve the problem directly with you or should you pass it onto Trading Standards or 'elf & Safety and get Tesco some well deserved publicity ?

Is there some sort of leaflet inside with any information about a company that actually made the bbq? Maybe they have some contact details and info about the product.

Did you get clubcard points with it as they can although they do not publicise it show your purchases and you can claim back that way.

Assuming you have put it together correctly,I would take the whole thing back to the store (having first rang up to find out the store Managers name, and that he will be in that day).I would take it back and insist on speaking to him, they will try to fob you off with department Managers, but only speak to him. If common sense still doesn't prevail,go to Trading Standards.

why buy a BBQ or anything else if you're not going to use it for a year. No wonder shops give such bad service if this is the crap they have to deal with. While those with genuine complaints have to take a number and wait.

people have lives with changes, unpredicted events etc etc
the bbq appears to be faulty so surely not assembling it instantly is less relevant

he/she bought it when they didn't have a garden. Check the goods when you get home don't wait years expecting companies to pick up the pieces when things are not right, every1 gone compensation mad.
  • no-one mentioned compensation
they just want a bbq that is safe to use

and it wasn't years they waited
    [sigh]
