Advise on Powergen Bill.

THis is a little confusing, but any help would be much appricated.

I used to live in a shared flat in which the rooms where rented directly from an agent, people came and went over the period of the year and a hlf i was there,

When i moved in i took over the Elec Bill (powergen). and made all payments at the post office. When i left the address in November last year I closed the account with no outstanding balance.

In January this year i was contacted by Powergen (how they got my new address i'm not sure) demanding £800, after a phone call they said they would investigate..

I heard nothing untill last week when a Debt Collecter letter came through for £218.

Powergen will not discuss the account saying it's been handed over to the debt collector, they can't do anything.

can anyone advise me on how i can challenge them, get itemised bills ect ..

thanks

Russ

Put it in writing to Powergen.
Advise them of your date of leaving and the details of who took over the responsibility for the bill.
Did you get a final bill when you left the property based upon actual readings?
At the same time, I would write to the Debt Collector advising them that you dispute the amount owing and have written to Powergen, I would also enclose a copy of the letter to Powergen.

With your electricity supply you cant just move out and walk away from it, there has to be a new customer (tenant) registered to that meter point. Therefore if the bill did not get put into the name of the agent you are still liable and will have to take the matter up with them. This frequently causes issues as the old tenant writes down his 'final' reading and the new tenant down his 'opening' reading and there is a difference of a few hundred between the 2. Someone has to pay for these so its is either (1) old tenant, (2) new tenant or (3) landlord. Hope this helps you.
