after trawling though many threads and review sites i have narrowed it down to the following 4 cameras:
CANON IXUS 80 £139 amazon
PANASONIC LUMIX DMC TZ3 £139
FUJI finepix F50d £98 amazon
[FONT=arial,tahoma,helvetica]Casio Exilim EX-Z9 Black £99 amazon
I think from what i've read these are pretty good cameras on the market and are in my price range and with good reviews.
I'd like the face recognition and image stabiliser and a good zoom.
Recommendations would be appreciated from all you camera experts!

Is it really necessary for half your post to be in bold?
However, I have a TZ3 and am very pleased with it, 7 day shop do cheap batteries for it too. It does not have face recognition though.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
CANON IXUS 80I'm a point and snap person (so far), not an expert. A few weeks ago bought a refurb g7 £185 canon from their refurb shop on ebay.
Just have a look here for recommendations http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/index.htm
I looked at most of the above ones. this is what I thought to myself. Canon not as good in the dark. Panasonic not good sound in vids also a friends macro shots were rubbish and felt that the photos lacked crispiness but good zoom. fuji is good in low light but poor macro and day light shots just were not there. Cassio ones had electronic IS and dpreview list this model with no IS, also too many presses of buttons to work you way around, good but just not there yet.
canon SD 800, 850, 870, 950 with a bit of jiggery pokery can do RAW photos (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Downloads ) just to 'push' the output a bit more, and these stunning HDR photos http://www.flickr.com/groups/top20hdr/
Why I bought my Canon G7: Well I did not know the other Canons could do raw mode. Wanted a better camera for lower light work as the flash always blinds people:(. Photos are great, but avi just capture the moment. I felt there was less of a trade-off comparing this brand/camera. Wanted something that would fit into my big pockets (and G7 is not he smallest of cameras). Generally I'm very happy with it. I can take pictures of A4 documents, people and events. Would have liked a longer zoom, face recognition is not always spot on, evening movie mode is quite good, much better than evening auto photo mode (i'm doing something wrong here and haven't worked it out yet??) I may have been just as happy with a SD850.GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.0
