Hi all,
have a small project i'd be grateful of advice on...
need to run a cable from one point in my room to another... about a meter and want to feed the cable through a hole in the plasterboard and out the other one.
Any clever ideas on how this might be possible?
Cheers

Its not exactly the same but, when i've had to run cables under the floorboards, what i've done is, got an old piece of plastic or aluminium curtain rail, something that has a little bit of give in it, but which is stiff enough to go where you push it. If you can feed this between the holes, it's easier than pushing cable. You can now tie your cable to it and pull it through. Good luck.A good cowboy always drinks upstream from the herd.

Cut a groove/slot in the plasterboard and stuff the cable in & make good the plaster. You might have to cut a notch in any upright that's between the entry & exit points.
If there are no uprights in the way you might be able to make to largish holes & poke the cable through from one to the other, as Sam said you might need to use a flexible rod to support it as you poke it through.
Run a length of trunking along the bottom of the skirting & paint it to blend in.
Surface run it & put some furniture/art in the way so you can't see it.0 -
Find a sturdy piece of wire and go fishing. Push a string through first hole, fish string out, attach new cable at end of string etc....Good luck.0

There is a specific tool, it may be worth trying to make something similar yourself. Here. Or try Ebay, search on CABLE ROD.
Usually behind plasterboard you will have CLS wooden supports which should be at 600mm, so going 1m, you will certainly encounter one, possibly two. Depending on how much room there is behind your CLS will depend on how easy it is to navigate behind it.

Is this an electric cable as you don't mention it? Or is this some other cable like aerial, speaker, telephone etc. If it is an electric cable then it should be pointed out that with 17th edition IEEE wiring regulations that came into force in July 2008 any electric cables that are less than 50mm from the surface (either side of the wall) must either be laid in a safe zone (recognised wiring route) with RCD protection on the circuit or must run through earthed metal conduit/trunking or have other suitable protection from screws and nails damaging them.
If it is electric cable, it's most likely that the work your doing is notifiable under Part P regulations and should therefore be carried out by a part p registered electrician.
