low disk space?

hi all, first time on this board so please be gentle im not very good when it comes to pcs.
i have a low disk sign on bottom right hand corner of pc, ive done disk clean up and defragged C drive capacity 143GB free space 132GB 91%free space after defrag.
i then analysed D drive capacity 5.66GB free space 9mb, % free space 0%
told me i should defrag D drive i started defrag and got this msg : D drive has 0%free space to run effectively disk defrag needs at least 15% usable free space.there is not enough disk space to complete operation delete some unneeded files on your hard drive then try again"
.
when i opened my D drive i got this msg "warning! recovery partition this area of your hard drive contains files used for your pc recovery do not delete files or alter them"

im sorry if that was abit long winded im just useless at this kind of thing
and any help would be much appreciated

thanks in advance

Did you try to do a disk cleanup on the d: drive?

Unless you've accidentally chosen to save application data on it, there should only have system files on it. A disk cleanup should be able to delete temporary system files and compress other files to free up space, though it's possible that you'll not get enough for a defrag.

As it's only a recovery partition, the fact that it's fragmented should not give you a problem, as it shouldn't be used a great deal during normal operation of the PC.
  • hi again no i have never touched my D drive and it wouldnt let me de frag it anyway so is there nothing to worry about if ive got low disk space i have done a disk clean up on my C drive but the low disk sign is still there

    thanks

Leave drive D alone, it's your recovery partition.
There is various stuff you should be able to delete such as programs you have
installed but never used. (add/remove programs).
  • Can you not increase the D drive capacity by taking some space from the C drive?

Programs tend to store lots of stuff you don't really need. there are several things you can do. Such are clearing out you tempory internet files. [edit seems this is not relevant]
Actually if you have so much free space on C: I don't see wha the problem is.
It seems D: is full, I am not sure why, are restore points stored on d:, my D:
drive is never used so I would not expect it to become full.

You could right click on the d: drive and select explore, by looking at the dates you might see what has changed recently which might give you a clue as to why it is full.
Obviously don't change anything you are unsure about. Just report it.
  • hi thanks for all your replies i did as you said esbo and explored my d drive it seems somebody had but a R n B album in there along with princes greatest hits but nobody is owning up to it !!
anyway ive deleted them and now the low disk space sign has gone YEAHHHHH thanks for all your help you wonderful people :j

You've sorted now. I would have suggested same as esbo. Worth lookin into every now and then, to ensure your D: doesn't clog up again

oh, and if your using vista it can hold LOTS of restore points, do a disk clean up by right clicking "C" properties and disk cleanup, after its done its thing for a while a box appears with what its found worth clearing, go to more options and you can delete all but the most recent restore point, it cleared 20GB for me, but if your not using Vista play a little R&B on your Hi-fi one evening and see who taps their foot, then ban them from touching your computer ever again.
