Polymer Clay Cake Toppers

Anyone else interested in doing caketoppers made from non toxic polymer clay (fimo, sculpey)? They make an excellent keepsake because they can't go mouldy or anything.
I've only been doing it for a few months now but I really enjoy it.
I started by making my nephew and his fiance a heart shaped (open) ring box and even put in a ring (which was a craft wedding ring, I bought a crystal and placed that on it to make it into an engagement ring). It was very effective and if I do say so myself was pretty good considering it was my 1st attempt. People kept asking my sister (she made the cake but didn't know how to decorate it) where she had bought it ,so I was quite impressed with myself.:D
I haven't got any photos as yet but I will post them on at a later date.

I love fimo, would love to make stuff with it but have never been any good when I tried, do you need lots of equipment? Would love to see photo's0

Once you get started its pretty easy. You can make things for card decorating and beads for jewelery making with it..I love it.
You can use cake decorating equipment depending on what you want to achieve, but I use kebab skewers and all kinds to be honest as things that I have hanging about are just as good. The only thing you really need is an acrylic roller which you can pick up cheaper on ebay than most craft shops and I also pick up a few good deals on the fimo there too. If there is a colour you need but can't get the exact match from one of the packs you can mix it together and get exactly what you need.
I'm going to get my sister to take a few pics of the engagement topper and I'm on doing some champagne bottles for a topper so I will pop that on too. I haven't bothered taking pictures of my toppers before now but from now on I will make sure to update with my new projects.Supporting the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust0 -

I love the ring box one. I work a lot in fimo and would echo what pamril1 said. You don't need a lot of fancy equipment. I normally use cocktail sticks and a few cutters, pins, and a pasta machine for rolling out the clay.
I've got into the christmas spirit early - I know it's only just september! - and have been making santas , angels and 'gingerbread' hearts(using cutters) for a small christmas tree I have. The santa instructions are at www.sculpey.com. Although without the little loop to hang them on the tree they could be used as a cake decoration.0 -
Thank you pie
Me and the cat, those are gorgeous. I'll be having a look at that link later and will have a go. They'd be nice to give to relatives for their tree.
I'm on making a Halloween witch at the minute but keep getting distracted and end up making a mistake.
Don't know about you Me but I find it quite relaxing especially when squashing the clay it's good for de-stressing :rotfl:Supporting the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust0 -

I had been getting mine from hobbycraft but realised I could get some good deals on ebay and online at Craftcellar. It's really easy to work with you should give it a go pie.Supporting the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust0

I get my clay from a local shop. but online www.polymerclaypit.co.uk I've used a lot in the past and can't fault them for service.
It is amazingly easy to work with. But at the minute every surface in my front room is covered with tiles and bits of clay!!! It is relaxing though. I've had the glittery clay knocking around for ages and now I've finally found a use for it!!0
