voip phone problem

New USB voip phone OK with Skype but is not recognised by Voipbuster or X-Lite.
It is stated to support Skype,SIP,H323 and MGCP. I keep revisiting the settings where the options don't seem very complicated ie I select 'usb phone' under 'sound devices' but the apparent simplicity has caused many lost hours on similar 'easy installations ' in the past and I am doubtless missing the obvious again. Can feel the brain softening.
Help appreciated.
