Also another thought are your partners magazines business related? You might be able to push those through as a business expense0

Northernbird wrote:I know the Sky looks excessive, but we don't go out at all, and we watch and tape the movies etc. We don't go out to dinner or anything, or go to the pub in an evening or weekends, so the cost is basically that.
Er, I don't go out to dinner or the pub either. Well, I go to the pub once a month ()with my mate, but don't spend more than £20, and evenings find me on the sofa watching the terrestrial channels or practicing piano.
It's just that when you have a big debt to pay off, things like cancelling Sky are an easy way to find extra money. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

Hi northernbird.
Please don't take offense by what I'm about to post as it is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. (just look at my signature).
SKY is a luxury that you should only have if you can afford it. You can't! Between the TV, mobile and magazines you are spending £1,524 a year on stuff that is totally unnecessary!
If someone said to you that they could wipe out your Natwest overdraft what would you say? Well, by cutting out the SKY, mobile and magazines you can wipe it out.
It's gonna be a long journey but you can do it. Your taking the right steps to do something about it. However there are more steps you can take. Just depends how desperate you are to get out of debt!
Good luck.0 -
You are not alone at all. For a start all the mse's are here. I too am coping with being in debt - at the highest was £112K!!
I see you have done the good old spreadsheet thing. My hubby knew we was in debt but didnt know how much until I took over the money side of things and put it on a spreadsheet.
My family know we are in debt but obviously they dont know the exact figure - they think we are only about £50K in debt (my dad is not well with his heart so its best this way!)
Is there anyway you can take on an evening/weekend job? Or maybe rent a room?
You must ditch sky - I know it sounds harsh but we have freeview and we still dont get time to watch all the channels on there, and on 1st Nov, they are launching ITV4 - yet another channel.
There is definately light at the end of the tunnel - trust me. If I can still smile being in debt as much as we are then there is hope for you
All the best and keep us posted.😁0 -
Thank you to everyone who has posted so far. I'm going through the tips and seeing what I can do. I was too late to go through Quidco for gas/elec switch, but I'm definitely going to do it for my landline. I had a sneaky look today and I think I can save over 150 a year by switching!
Thank-you Bluezone! Whilst I obviously am not glad you were in a similar situation to me, I don't feel quite so stupid or freaky. I'll keep smiling. It's amazing what you manage to do in the outside world when you have to. At the moment, I'm glad I'm managing to get on with my job with a smile on my face.
I'm looking at what I can do to supplement my income. I leave the house at 6am and don't get back until 9pm, so I'm looking at writing, proofreading etc (I'm qualified at that). I've taken a look at the moneymaking hints thread which was very useful, so I'll see how I do at that.
I managed to avoid a default on one of my credit cards over the weekend which I was glad about.
Once again, thank you to everyone. I'm still thinking about my debt all of the time, but now it feels more positive. I'm thinking about how I'm going to get out of it, how I can save money, how little can I get by on....
I wish I had found you all earlier....I hope I can get to the point where I can help others as well.
I'll keep you posted.
Just one extra thing, I'm shifting our accounts from my current bank ( to lovely no-credit basic accounts - and I'm being serious with the lovely) and I want to make a proposal to them to pay the overdraft back. How can I go about doing that and do you think they will stop charges? I'll also be shifting my loan standing order to my new bank account. Do you think they will do that? They won't let me cancel the standing order (understandably), but will they shift it?
Anyway, to everyone else out there with debt sitting on their shoulder and lurking on this site - don't be shy. I'm still in the same amount of debt I was in three days ago, but I'm feeling better anyway.Lightbulb moment - October 2005
Debt at highest - £97,000
Debt now (15/06/07) - £83,908.47 (still  but every little helps!)
Debtfree Date - 2015 (but working on it)!
2007 Comp Challenge - £360/£0 (I have no luck with winning!)0 -

Although MSE can't pay off your debt, this does show that "a problem shared is a problem halved".:snow_grin"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow........":snow_grin0 -
I'd absolutely agree with ceegee, stick around here and remember that you are not alone. xXxOctober make £10/day currently £11.020

Just a couple of things related to stuff that's been mentioned above (I'm not very good at this but check out the other parts of the forum regularly).
Sky - just cancel it, your card will turn into a freesat card, no need to spend the £20.
Landline - if it's BT and you call UK landlines mostly, look into https://www.18866.com or https://www.call1899.com. A UK call of any length to anywhere costs 3p (at the moment). Try and call as many people as you can on their landlines (I know that sounds obvious!). Your partner should also be able to use this within their business as well which might reduce their mobile cost.
Also in line with people's recommendations to cancel Sky, Seeing as you say you don't go out much why don't you cancel the mobile too? People can reach you at home?0 -

Freesat is different to just using the existing sky box without card, for instance you can't get any of the itv channels, channel 4 & 5. Try taking your sky card out and you will see which channels are available. Freesat is a different service with more channel optionsMortgage-free wannabe!0 -
£95,000 in debt!??!?!? Sorry, I thought my debts were bad but that is a lot!
Do you own anything of serious value (like a house) because owing that much, is it only me that thinks that bankruptcy is an option!?!?!?
