Setting up a code for wireless router?!

Hello

I admit I am rubbish with computers....... :o

I have got a laptop and have a wireless router. I bought an adaptor so I could use the router wireless and my DH set it up for me.... So I can now use it wireless....

I was reading somewhere that you should have a code set up before you go on the internet so on-one else can use your connection? How do you do this? Please can someone provide clear idiot-proof instructions that I can use or pass on to an unwilling helper!!

Thanks in advance!

For specific instructions it depends on the router you've got (the manual should actually give you the step by step instructions for that model). Really what you want to look for is setting up encryption (WPA or better, avoid the option of WEP if it gives it, anything with WPA or WPA2 in the encryption type is fine).

Well this is from Tiscali's site and most likely it appears it's come with encryption set up and the encryption key is written on the router.

Well sounds to me like you've already done it all then (well your DH anyway).

Whatever wifi software you'r running on your laptop (the adaptor's own or windows) it should give the information of the wireless network your connected to and should say whether it's secure or not and also the encryption type if it is. :)

    LL21,

It's wise to do at least these first three things:

    1. Set up WPA2 encryption (if your kit supports it).

    2. Set your wireless router to suppress broadcasting its presence and identity (so that other people don't even realise that it's operating and within range).

    3. Configure MAC filtering (if your kit supports it) so that your router only permits access to your network by computers and other devices that are on your personal list.

    4. Implement a firewall.
