testdisk

Does anyone have any experience with testdisk? I've managed to 'break' my machine with it!

I wanted to put Ubuntu back on my system but Gparted on the live CD showed my whole HD as 'unallocated'. Testdisk showed me that the number of reserved sectors in my FAT partition was wrong so I tried to use it to fix it and.. broke it! :o

I'm running on the live CD only now and testdisk shows me all my (6) partitions but 'says' they're all 'D' (deleted). I'm tempted to change their type to *,P and L, although I'm not exactly sure which should be which.. (I broke it by changing my boot partition using testdisk!)

On a side note, a 'Linux' or 'other OS' sub-forum might be nice here... ^..^

It's okay, you can stop helping now. I've fixed it. :p

I'm sure my urges to mess about will get the better of me soon and I'll bu99er it up again, but for now all is well :j

We weren't a lot of help on that one eh? If it's any consolation I've messed up things with TestDisk before - it just doesn't seem to have a very intuitive user interface, and often seems to report that the geometry of your disk is wrong when it isn't.

Some helpful person on this forum recommended SuperGrub Boot Disk a while ago, which does seem quite good at fixing MBR and other boot loader related problems:
