Bt cordless phone

Help needed with BT Freelance XD 100 digital cordless phone. I have just bought one from e-bay. How long does it take for the battery to charge? The problem is the phone rings, so it must be connected properly but there is no dial tone when I want to make a phone call. Also do they have to be left on the charger all the times as it seems a bit hot? How long do the rechargeable batteries last, I was not aware they run on batteries as well otherwise would not have bother? Is the electicity cost on these phone low? Sorry to ask such silly questions? Thanks

The fact that you have no dial-tone points to either a problem with your cordless telephone or the socket wiring in your house.

Have you got a non-cordless handset that you know works to plug in in place of the cordless one? If that works then it looks like your cordless handset is faulty.

The manuals for these phones normally recommend charging the batteries for 16 hours before use however, in my experience, this is unnecessary and you should be able to use the device after only a couple of hours. We leave our cordless phones on the bases whenever they are not in use (just to keep the charge up) although it is good practice to let the batteries run down once a month to 'condition' them.

As far as the 'How long to rechargables last' question goes. Our handsets last over 5 days off the base without charging. If you mean what is the lifespan of rechargeable batteries before replacement, I am unable to give a specific answer but I have NEVER had to replace cordless phone batteries, the phones have always needed replacing before the batteries expire.

    Hope that helps.

    That doesn't sound good.

If the batteries are 'hot' (as opposed to 'warm') that is not normal. Equally, you should, as mark says, be able to get a dial tone after a couple of hours.

Can you program a name and number into the handset's 'phonebook'?

Are you sure the handset is registered to the base station?

Yes, I am sure it is registered because the green light is on and also the red light for the battery. The symbol for the battery being charged stays on only for a few seconds. I know, it is connected properly because the phone rings and I can see the number on the caller displays. I think, I will give it 16 hrs of charge then e-mailed the seller. Thanks for your help.

Probably a daft thought but you do have rechargeable batteries in the phone I suppose? I have seen this recently, the batts get hot and then leak, very dangerous!

AFAIK, the green light just means the base station is connected to the mains. I don't think it confirms the handset is actually registered.

I believe also that the red light means it is charging (or trying to charge) the handset which is sitting on it.

Good point. Hadn't thought of that. It would account for the 'hot' feel and the 'charging' symbol only staying on for a few seconds as well.

I have just e-mailed the seller who appears to be reputable and see what happens. It's not the batteries who get warm, yes they are rechargeable ones,it's the main supply unit, and this according to the manual is normal. The phone has been left on charge for well over 24 yrs, when it rings, it shows all the symbols for making a phone call and display the caller number, but when I pick it there is nothing. I just do not understand, everything seems to be OK except for the DIAL TONE and cannot make or receive a phone call. How do I check whether the phone is registered, is there any toher way of doing it? Will see what the seller wiill do about it, it does sell a lot of cordless phones. As it is, I thought I got a bargain but will finish by paying for postage to send it back which was not cheap as he charged £6.99 for postage. Thanks for your help.

PS Can somebody tell me how the twin cordless phone work?

The fact that you see the CLI information on the handset while it's sitting on the charger/base unit when you get an incoming call suggests the handset is registered (the base unit is communicating with the handset anyway).

In the handbook, you should find details of how to register a handset - you've nothing to lose by trying that now.

I bought a similar DECT (the BT Studio 100 Twin) a few weeks ago and had exactly the problem you are experiencing - one handset getting very hot on the charger but never charging (the other worked perfectly). The seller (an internet firm, not via ebay) was very helpful and exchanged the whole package.

Thanks for your help and advice. Heinz what's was wrong with your phone? Did you get no dial tone as well?I know for sure that it is registered to the base as -1- is displayed on the screen, that's what the manual says, and it is being charged as I can see the icon discharge battery. Everything seems to be OK except there is no dial tone. I have read the manual carefully and follow the instructions to the letter. This item was sold as new and was tested prior to despatch according to the seller. The problem is I will have to send at my cost and if found not faulty I will have to pay a small sum of money for their trouble. Not really worth as the phone costs £12 in the auction. I am concerned about this, may the phone is OK but I cannot get a signal. I have tried it at my friend's house and the phone does not even ring in her place. Please, anybody has any idea what could be wrong. Still not heard from the seller, I have sent him two e-mails. Thanks again.
