Help! How do I store potatoes?

Thank you so much, was moaning to hubbie that the potatoes I bought on Fri have started to sprout already. I have thrown so many potatoes away as I couldn't get them to last any longer than a few days.
Found a large paper bag with handles in my porch cupboard, removed the pots from the plastic bags put them in the bag folded over the top to keep them nice and snug and left them in the cupboard. Its v cold in there but not damp so hopefully they should be ok. :T0 -
I agree best to keep them cold and dark. I do store some in the fridge in the salad drawer, cold and dark, they seem to last ok if plastic bag is well ripped open.Bless Martin's Little Cotton Socks. I thank him for giving us MSE. Look what its grown into!

Would a sealed tin (like a large bread bin) be a good thing to store potatoes in - I'm looking for something mouse proof? I have seen a large enamel tin which calls to me but I am sure I could find a less expensive alternative.

Hi sybil,
A sealed tin somewhere cool will be fine. There's an existing thread with lots of advice on storing potatoes that should help:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

We have bought two bags of potatoes now and they have both sprouted. We are keeping them in the brown paper type sack them come in and kept one lot in the garage and the other in the porch and always folded the top over and both sacks have started to sprout.
Are they safe to eat as they sprout, and how can I stop this happening. There are so many potatoes I can't fit them all in the fridge.:hello:0 -
Hi V.Lucky,
Potatoes with a few sprouts on them are absolutely fine to eat. This thread might help to reassure you:
Sprouting spuds ............
If I have potatoes that are growing sprouts about this time of year, I plant them...in just over three months you end up with lovely new potatoes.

I don't really see why everyone's panicking about their potatoes going sprouty? Nothing wrong with that, just give them a peel, dig out any eyes and they're still fine to cook and use.
My spuds are just sculling about loose in a kitchen cupboard (though I don't have many), my mum's in her understairs cupboard and my nan's in the garden shed, none of us have any trouble.

Hi, does anyone know whats the best way to store potatoes? I'm thinking of getting a sack (buying in bulk), but with there being only 2 of us (3 every other weekend), I don't want them sprouting or going mouldy.Sometimes you're the dog, but more often you're the tree!:D0

Don't keep them in plastic or they will sweat. When I buy them in a paper sack I keep them in that (as long as they are already dry) and in the dark and cool. If they are covered in dirt still then even better as the "washed" ones don't keep as long. I also keep smaller bags of spuds in a fabric bag which also stops them sweating.
They do start sprouting eventually but it takes a while for them to go like this.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks
