Hi
Can anybody give me some advice please?
My son has bought an ethernet cable and is trying to get set up on x-box live. The cable is plugged into an ethernet port on the back of my pc (ntl broadband) and the other end is into the back of the x-box.
He's having problems with a DNS error. We need to veryify the DNS Server settings match the settings provided by our ISP.
Where do we look on the PC or wherever for the info needed? Can anybody help us as we're completely green on this problem.
Grateful for any advice given.
Best wishes.

Hi there,
Run the ethernet cable into your router NOT your PC!! If your router has no spare ethernet port then purchase a ethernet switch (mine was a 15quid netgear). You then connect a cable from your switch box to your single ethernet socket in your router, connect your pc and xbox ethernet into your switch box.
This worked fine for me on a BT voyager 205 - pc - xbox live setup.
I have seen on some tech pages that if problems occur on other setups ie ntl, aol etc or custom adsl modems (netgear, linksys etc) that you can set up a DMZ (De Militarised Zone) which opens up all the ports on your router which can/will make xbox live work but I would strongly advise against this as it would open up your network to hackers. Try and find the PORT NUMBER that XBOX live uses and set your router to open that port only... a far better option I think. (Do a google search for xbox live port number)!
Anyhow hopes this helps you and any other XBOX live users having problems.

Very many thanks to you all for your advice.
I knew we must be doing something silly. My son spent ALL day yesterday trying every which way he could think of to get it working.
I know this may be obvious to you all - but what is a ROUTER?
Is this something we already have, or is it something else we need to purchase?
Apologies for being so dim when it comes to PC set-ups, but when it comes to add-on's for the PC, it becomes a very foggy day indeed for me!
Advice gratefully received. :rotfl:
Best wishes.sassybird0 -
Hi sassy.
A router is basically a box which directs data from your broadband connection to one or more network devices. (network devices can be your PC , X-BOX, internet radio or PS2 with network adapter).
An ADSL modem is often called a router and vice versa.
I assume you (b4 connecting your xbox) had a box that connected between your PC and phone socket (I'm excluding the microfilter here!!). This is probably your router/adsl modem. (EXCEPTION : i dunno about this but if you are connected to a cable supplier you may have a connection to the optical fibre network so will not have an adsl modem!!! let me know if this is the case!).
In any case if you have an ethernet output on the box thingy connected to the phone line (again I'm not talking about the little white microfilter here!) then follow the solution I gave you last time ie but a ethernet switch! If you want to save money then connect your PC to the USB port on your modem/router if one is available and your xbox to the ethernet port on the router.
Hope this helps

The one I use for X-Box Live is this one - CLICK HERE
It has never given me one problem.
The benefit with using a router is that you don't need to have your PC on at the same time as playing X-Box Live. Before I had the router I was using internet connection sharing and had to fire the PC up first.
Some people do say that the expense isn't worth it, but I've spent many, many hours on X-Box Live and think it to be money well spent.0
