Brother DCP120 all in one printer problem

I have a Brother DCP-120C all-in-one printer which I got for £50 after seeing an offer on the grabbit board. I think a few people have bought them and wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem to me?

There is an error message on the LCD screen saying "unable to clean - see troubleshooting and routine maintenance chapter in user's guide" and I can't use the printer at all, not even for copying or scanning.

I followed the instructions in the user guide and found a piece of paper that was jammed in the printer, which I removed. The user guide said the printer had to be unplugged from the mains power to reset it, which I also did. The error message is still on and it won't go away :( I've checked and there's definitely no paper still stuck inside. I'm thinking the printer's kaput and I'll have to buy a new one, as it will probably cost a lot to repair. Any ideas anyone?
