confused by dynDNS

Hi, as far as I understand security is improved through a new hostname via dynDNS? I don't understand how to use it though! Downloaded dynDNS software and logged in, fine, but do I have to create a domain in order for the hostname to get into operation. Just with installing the router again, and not sp3, after the saga with trying to install router!, thinking of lots of other security measures. Can't get onto ShieldsUP, so unbelievably slow and doesn't run right, so thought about investigating router's extra security ... set it up to run from dynDNS, and put in my password stuff. But am not seeing any difference. When I go to a site that sees if it can pick up hostname, picks up original hostname. Confused as usual! (Am with Virgin Media).

Hi
You should be able to go to dyndns and set up a free hostname something.kicks-!!!.net or something like that it will give you a choice. Once that is done thats all you need to do I think. You might want to check on the site that your current ip address is assigned correctly to your free host
Not sure if it improves securty to be honest but it does make it easier to connect to home PCs or any servers running at home when your not at home ......if that makes sense0 -

Thanks tododo, had been confused if dynDNS offers two complementary services, a new hostname and domain, or two separate services. Only installed it incase it was an improvement on security, as read that hostname can be found easily/bad for security. If it really doesn't improve security, may as well just switch the router back to normal functioning, lol!

IMHO dyndns isn't going to make much difference to the security of your PC, it's just a DNS server that gets updated by software on your router or PC when your ISP hands-out an updated IP address.
NB the hostname your ISP associates with your IP isn't replaced by dyndns, the two exist together.0 -

Thanks amcluesent, hadn't realised that about the hostname, and thanks for confirming dynDNS won't make PC more secure. Have uninstalled dynDNS. Does everyone have a problem getting onto ShieldsUP, lol!?
